The Reverence Lloyd R. Hanson

The Reverend Lloyd R. Hanson

Biography

My ecumenical journey started a few years after my ordination in June 1960. Soon thereafter I learned of the annual celebration of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This is always January 18-25. Prayer changes things! Since that time I have been dedicated to the advancement of ecumenism.

Locally there have been ecumenical events celebrated by Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians, United Methodists and other Protestant denominations. On occasion, one or two Orthodox Communions have participated.

Including this year, I will have attended five of the National Workshops on Christian Unity. I have served as a representative to the North State Ecumenical Conference since the early 80's.

History

A major ecumenical celebration was the Pentecost Celebration of Baptism, May 14, 1989, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. Four bishops: Bishop Francis Quinn of the Roman Catholic Sacramento Diocese, Bishop John Thompson of the Northern California Episcopal Dioceses, Bishop Lyle Miller of the Sierra Pacific Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Archbishop of California each baptized a child of their respective traditions in the same Baptismal Font at the same gathering. This event made national and international news.
